Tips for Adults Returning to College

Tips for adults returning to college

Life is a journey that runs differently for everyone. Some people land their dream job at 22, others never even go to college because they became a successful business owner. Others finish college with a degree they don’t like and spend years forcing themselves to work a job they hate. Then there are more who either didn't have the opportunity to go to college or dropped out of a degree program. Whatever the case may be for you, just know that you are never too old to earn a degree and study.

Learning doesn't have an age limit, so it doesn't matter whether you're 30 or 60. Anyone can go to college, earn a degree and feel great about themselves because of all the hard work they've put into completing a program. A few decades ago, seeing someone in their 30s or 40s on campus would have been strange, but that's not the case today. Online programs made college more accessible to everyone, and adult learners over 25 actually make up more than half of the country's entire college student population. If you're wondering whether you can go back to school or just need that extra push, here are some motivational tips to get you headed in the right direction.

You Can Learn on Your Terms

Some of the greatest challenges adult learners face are scheduling and prioritizing their coursework. Between their jobs and families, it can be difficult for someone with a full schedule to set aside time to further their education. Attending classes all day on a campus might not be an option, but that's no problem today. There are thousands of degree programs offered entirely online from fully accredited colleges and universities around the country. You set your own hours, work at your own pace and get to shape your college experience to suit your life.

Financing Options Are Greater Than Ever

If you previously attended school, you may still be facing student debt. The thought of adding thousands of dollars more to that can be a major turn-off, but this deterrent doesn't have to keep you out of the classroom. With private lenders, you can take out a personal student loan for your graduate degree and worry less about tuition cost. Tuition assistance is also available for associate's degree learners and undergraduate students, so whether you're a first-time attendee or getting your second bachelor's, there is plenty of help available. Don't forget to look into scholarships. There are many grants awarded specifically to adults returning to school that can help offset the cost of tuition and reduce how much you have to borrow.

You Can Become an Inspiration

Many people become inspired to make changes in their life when they see someone they love or relate to making positive changes. You could become an even better role model for your children, proving that there's nothing they can't achieve if they set their minds to it. You could also share some of your experiences as an adult learner with others online. Who knows, your journey may be the spark that starts someone else's educational transformation.

Do Not Let Doubt Hold You Back

Anxiety and doubt are just that. They aren't commands or orders to stay put and never grow. If you can dream of a brighter future, you can make it happen. If you find yourself struggling the most with self-doubt and insecurity about your intelligence and abilities, write a list of all your best qualities. Then, identify the areas you're most worried about. Everyone has to start somewhere, and the best thing you can do is begin moving from exactly where you are.
